With federal health officials moving to allow children 12 and older to get Pfizer s coronavirus vaccine, there s ongoing discussion of whether students returning this fall will be required to be vaccinated.
The superintendent of schools in Needham, Massachusetts, says students in town will be required to get the COVID-19 vaccine if it s fully approved by the Food and Drug Administration. If it s required by the state Department of Public Health, there won t be an option, said Superintendent Dan Gutekanst. It s absolutely my expectation that once it is fully authorized, and after we get guidance from the Department of Public Health, that we will require our students and families to make sure they re vaccinated.

KEENE VALLEY Keene Central School District administrators have proposed a more than $6.7 million budget for the upcoming school year that carries a tax levy increase of 7.67%. The proposed 2021-2022 budget does meet the state tax cap, which was set at 7.67% for the district, according to Superintendent Dan Mayberry. That’s higher than in most other local districts, which have tax caps below 2%. The tax cap for each district is calculated with a formula that takes into account everything from a district’s cash on hand to the debt it carries. Mayberry said the reason the cap appears to be much higher is because last year the district didn’t have a capital project payment.

Coronavirus Coverage The classroom at Pottstown Middle School was quiet. Most of Woods’ students don’t speak aloud during class, instead typing questions in the chat. Keeping them engaged is a struggle: On a recent Thursday, one student logged out after 30 seconds. Another joined 26 minutes after class began.
