making that we normally have. let s assume and quite frankly i think the logical assumption, nothing gets done. what do you think the impact is politically? it i personally don t like the supercommittees with super powers. i like sausage making. i think it is called democracy. the key thing that will happen over the next year is something called an election. we will have a bigger one next year. the one political effect. i don t know which party it will help in the short-term. i think it increases the sense that november 2012 is a big election and the two parties have a fundamentally decision of the right size and different position opt right seidenberg and scope of the government and that will have to be litigated and decided by the people of the country not by a supercommittee with super powers. chris: to the degree that the failure gets portrayed as republicans refuse to cut taxes on the wealthy.
compromise plan but we also have to be willing to talk about where and how we could compromise and you re seeing that out of supercommittees. senator baucus put forth a plan that probably wasn t his choice but moved the ball forward, the republicans have put revenues on the table through tax reform. not as much as democrats would like but it s a start to have discussions going. so it s hard to find the specifics but you are seeing progress on, don t forget, what is a very hard issue. we re talking about fixing social security, medicare, the tax system. this is not easy stuff. jenna: it isn t. again, the headlines from our conversation is that you re being well received, at least from both sides, and that could be promising to us as viewers to know there is work being done, because sometimes it s doubtful, at least looking in. maya, nice having you with us and we look to updates over time to see what the progress is like as we near this deadline. thank you again. thank you. jon: congr
something really stupendous, if you will, then it goes to congress, and even congress takes a year, year and a half before it gets through. definitely this is a long-term scenario in terms of what will happen, but i will bring attention to the fact that in a recent poll by politico, 60% is unaware of supercommittees. they don t know non how long it is. these are areas of disconnect between the mack nations and what the public demands. that s a small percentage the number of congress you think it would fail. almost everyone is resigned to the motion, there is per save i have sigts poind out, the notion that people would try to me
but now there s this movement, as if they don t have enough on their plate, this supercommittee, to also add that they have a jobs program that should be pared with this decifit reduction plan. is that too much to ask at this point? look, one of the reasons you can tell a democracy is in trouble is when they keep going around the normal rules, when presidents keep issuing executive orders, creating polices without consulting congress, when congress advocates abdicates its responsibility and creates supercommittees which weren t part of the traditional arrangement. i think this is just asking for trouble. you know, the federal reserve got into trouble i think originally when they were given two duties, about 40 years ago. they were told you re supposed to contain inflation, you re also supposed to reduce unemployment. those are contradictory and shouldn t be under the same roof. if the supercommit see charged with reducing the deficit and using government polices to boost employment
