severe weather that could last at least throughout the evening, 6:00 local time there. i believe bill karins put it at about a 30% chance we could see a major tornado or something certainly significant, what could you tell us of the chances again today, at least the weather predictors out there? the conditions that are now in place really across central and northern texas, eastward into louisiana, are similar to yesterday in the sense that we expect to see supercell thunderstorms, the kinds that have rotating updrafts and could produce tornadoes. we re also concerned those storms could merge together into a squall line type of system that we call a bow echo that would race eastward, producing a widespread swath, 60, perhaps 80-mile-per-hour winds, producing damage over a much larger area than we typically see with a single storm, and of course, that would only add to the impacts and the need for response over a large area. so to reiterate, what we re looking at right now, the sto

they re training over each other, tony. what s happening on a larger scale is the low that refuses to release and move eastward rotates pieces of energy. we have one rotating up into the mountains and only help feed those thunderstorms or at least develop them. and we re developing them into supercell thunderstorms and the case at least of this morning with tornadoes and a number of warnings still in effect. living in this these areas certainly want to take cover until it rolls through until further notice. thank you. we want to get a quick market check because another story we re following today is perhaps dow 11,000. i m trying to sneak a peek at where we stand right now. carter evans at the new york stock exchange for us. are you there? yeah. i m here. you know, we are getting closer to 11,000, tony, but it certainly isn t because of the reports, the economic reports we have been getting today.

shear about a vertical axis. and then like an ice skater who brings her arms in and spins faster, you have all this moisture and energy being focused around this vertical axis. in a typical thunderstorm it usually snuffs itself out within about 30 to 45 minutes. but in these supercell thunderstorms they tilt over slightly due to wind shear, and that protects the warm updraft. and it sustains the warm updraft. so instead of dying out after 45 minutes it goes on hour after hour. and in the process you have enormous amounts of energy focusing in right around the central core. and ultimately something called a rear flank downdraft, a surge of drier, cooler buoyant air pulls this whole circulation down to the ground and we have a tornado. out of 100 thunderstorms, chris, maybe one or two will ever go on to produce a tornado. that s the good news. they are exceedingly rare, and the odds of seeing an f-5 probably comparable to
