The social distancing compliance against the spread of the Coronavirus has not been applicable at the Sunyani Central Prison (SCP) cells due to the overcrowding of inmates.
The Bono Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Prison Service (GPS), Deputy Superintendent of Prisons (DSP) Johann Nii Narh Nartey, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview.
DSP Nartey said the male cells which were supposed to accommodate about 450 inmates were now housing 880 inmates, but the situation at the female cells was totally different as the inmate population was less than 20.
According to him, apart from the social distancing challenge, the authority of the SCP with the support of the local Covid -19 Management Team were doing everything possible to ensure compliance with safety protocols among the inmates and the officers to prevent spread and infection at the place.

The Royals in Development International Foundation (RIDIF), a Ghanaian- international Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO)has donated a large quantity of clothing items valued at GH¢11,000.00 to the inmates of the Sunyani Central Prison.
They comprised a quantity of straight dresses, sewn (top and down) cloth, headscarf, trousers and top wears, skirts and blouses and handbags for the female inmates as well as some amount of trousers and top wears for the male inmates.
Mr Silas Morklah Coffie, the Administrator/Public Relations Officer (PRO) of RIDIF said the NGO supported the needy by “focusing on changing lives of especially women and children for the best” through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), which is recognised as a crucial vehicle for social equity and sustainable development.
