Springfield IL s Black Lives Matter chapter gets honorary street signs

The event was widely praised for its peacefulness and effectiveness. Black Lives Matter got its national start in 2013 after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Black teen Trayvon Martin a year and a half earlier. The movement got traction for its street demonstrations following the 2014 deaths of of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in New York City. Springfield Mayor Jim Langfelder is hoping to have Jackson Street from Capitol Avenue to the Lincoln Home area renamed Harry Marshall Avenue. Currently, the honorary designation for Marshall covers the intersections of Jackson at Second, Fourth, Seventh, Ninth, 11th and Elm streets; McCreery and Wheeler avenues; and Martin Luther King Drive.

Activists Want Charges Dropped Against Mentally Ill Man Who Was Shot By Police

By WMAY Newsroom May 15, 2021 | 7:09 AM Springfield activists want prosecutors to drop charges against a mentally ill man who was shot and critically wounded by a Chatham cop in March. Authorities found the officer was justified in shooting Gregory Small, Jr., who had moved toward the cop while holding a knife. Small was later charged with felony assault. His sister, Sunshine Clemons, says when a family turns to police for help, it shouldn’t result in someone being shot and facing criminal charges. She and others have formed a group, Speak Out for Gregory, to advocate for him. Small’s case could be referred to mental health court, but he would have to plead guilty to the charge first with a possibility of having the charge expunged later if he completes treatment.

Mental health awareness: Sisters campaign to Speak out for Gregory

After two months of watching their brother recover from multiple gunshot wounds suffered during a mental health crisis where a Chatham Police officer shot him, sisters Sunshine Clemons and Shawnaci Schroeder took to social media this week to speak out for their brother, Gregory Small Jr.  It s Mental Health Awareness Month and we really want to highlight changes that are needed in our society,” said Clemons, who is the co-founder of Black Lives Matter Springfield. “We really need a mental health crisis response option other than the police.”  While the sisters hope talking publicly about their family’s recent experience will start productive conversations about mental health and bring awareness to how mental health crisis calls are handled, the family’s primary objective is getting the aggravated assault charge brought against Small dropped.
