his motive is unclear but no indication yet why james targeted the particular subway stop in sunset park neighborhood but in now deleted youtube videos, james discussed violence talking about death in a race war and the desire to exterminate certain groups of people. new york s asian-american federation called tuesday s shooting trama in a neighborhood is what makes new york city great noting it s home to brooklyn s china town and a large hispanic population in multi racial working class neighborhood. joining me now is congresswoman velasquez that represents the district where the shooting took place. having lived in new york and born in brooklyn, i m sensitive to this idea there was a time in new york when walking around as a black person in certain areas you just felt afraid whether it was of police or other people in neighborhoods, you re talking about that era when those kind of things happen in places like howard beach, et cetera but now you know asian-americans are
ron, i don t know if you ve had an opportunity to talk to sunset park residents. how is the neighborhood reacting? what else can you tell us about what you re seeing on the scene? reporter: i think most residents here are sort of shocked this has happened here. it seems to have little to do with this particular neighborhood at this point. we know nothing that suggests why the gunman opened fire, put on the gas mask here as the train was going into the 36th street station on the way presumably to new york, another few stops along the way. the police investigators said nothing that suggests why here, why now, why today. so i think for the most part, residents here are feeling a lot of questions about why this neighborhood. the bigger problem at this point i think that was just the manhunt, the search. where is this individual? the authorities aren t sure whether he got back on the train. there were some reports he ran into the subway tunnel.
conrad. you live in sunset park. you saw the aftermath of the shooting i m told. tell us exactly what you saw. where were you and when did you realize something was terribly wrong? well, i was on the level above that one. what i saw was a young guy run up to the station booth, and he was bleeding from the legs, i think. it seemed like his pants were down and he was tending to his wounds. but otherwise he seemed like he was, you know, seemed like he was okay. i m hoping he s all right. he was essentially alerting people to what happened. he was saying there s been people injured, they re bleeding, and, you know, that s
know, if somebody is going when they do this maybe they had you just have to hope for the best but as for right now the main issue is the crime scene and the people that were injured. dana: joe, thank you so much. any time. bill: let s catch up our viewers on the news. associated press reporting multiple people shot at that subway station in brooklyn, new york. that s according to the fire department on scene as you can see from the screen on your monitor there, your tv at home. fire personnel responding to reports of smoke and 36th street station. this is the sunset park neighborhood. when they arrived they found multiple people shot, undetonated devices. that again according to the fire department. also law enforcement sources briefed on the matter say preliminary information indicate the suspect was dressed in some sort of construction attire.
in sunset park? reporter: they just opened up the streets here so now traffic can go through. it had been closed all morning since the shooting. a couple of pieces of information for you, one from a source at the mta, who is telling me what they do not know is whether the suspect fled within the subway tunnels or if the suspect left and walked up the stairs and fled on the street. what they re doing right now is going from subway to subway to subway, station to station to station, forgive, they re going this way because he was on the northbound line, and they are looking at all of the surveillance video they can to see, to try to determine if they can catch a glimpse of this person within the subway tunnels. they don t know, again, whether he fled underground or up here. they re also doing the same thing with all the surveillance video on the street. they ve talked to multiple witnesses, and so far not a single one of them can give them a clear indication where this suspect went, wha
