The Central Oregon Fire Management Service is partnering with local structural firefighting departments around Central Oregon to provide an immersive scenario-based wildland firefighting program designed to illuminate firefighters' understanding of wildland firefighting suppression tactics, mutual aid and the dynamics of interagency response in an emerging wildfire incident. The three-day course begins with a classroom portion to familiarize participants with wildland firefighting procedures, communications and tools followed by two days of live-fire response exercises. The live-fire portions of the course will be held this Thursday and Friday along Forest Service Road 41 adjacent to Besson Day Use Area. Over one hundred participants from fire departments ranging from Crescent to Warm Springs will be in attendance. The Deschutes County Commissioners voted unanimously to support the Sunriver Public Safety Building project by approving a funding request totaling $8 million to be disbursed over the next three years. The Sunriver Service District will also contribute $3 million from their reserve fund, and the remaining $7 million will be borrowed with a low interest, tax-exempt loan. To service this debt, the Deschutes County Commissioners voted in favor (3-0) to approve Resolution No. 2022-006, submitting to the voters in the Sunriver Service District an election in May on a new 10-year capital improvement local option levy.
