Ski Spree Taste of Sunlight 2021 this weekend

The Sunlight Yeti kicks back and takes a ride up the lift for a ski run at Sunlight Mountain Resort. Chelsea Self / Post Independent X marks the spot. Or in this case, a big dollar bill found somewhere on your cruise down the mountain. Sunlight Mountain Resort will host Ski Spree Taste of Sunlight 2021 this weekend, a longtime promotional event that usually includes treasure hunts and a chili cook-out provided by various restaurants throughout the Roaring Fork Valley. But the not-so-abominable Sunny Yeti this year is asking people to socially distance while participating in the Mountain Treasure Hunt and saying no to the chili cook out. Any riders lucky enough to spot an oversized dollar bill on the mountain can snag it, bring it back to the guest service office at the base lodge and exchange it for all sorts of goodies.

Great weather for a Roaring Fork Valley powder day:

Rifle-provided bus to Sunlight Mountain to resume trips next season

It’s not gone forever. The Rifle-provided bus to Sunlight Mountain, a service that usually takes local kids to go skiing at a reduced cost, was placed on hold this season due to COVID-19. Recreation Program Manager Austin Rickstrew said, however, the bus is slated to return next season. “Because of COVID restrictions, we couldn’t get as many kids on the bus, so we couldn’t afford to operate it,” he said. Usually the service costs about $11,000 a year to operate an expense incurred by the city’s parks and recreation department. However, since the city estimated they could only take about 20 kids on the bus as opposed to the typical 75 or more season pass holders they simply had to put the service on hold.

Ski, snowboard traffic picking up at Sunlight Mountain

Sunlight Mountain Resort worker Jaramie Smith is busy directing traffic like it’s a Metallica concert. He helps push a small sedan stuck in the snow with a coworker, then goes back to playing mountain marshaller. “We’ve just had good turnouts, and it seems like the crowds are pretty happy,” he said. “It’s good snow for the season, ya know? With more people coming up, we’re having more traffic to direct.”
