COLOMBO (News 1st): Drugs and narcotics worth Rs. 250 million were seized in the year 2020, Sri Lanka Customs said.
“During the course of the new year (2021), narcotics worth over Rs. 135 million were seized so far, Sunil Jayaratne Additional Director at Sri Lanka Customs and Customs Spokesperson said on Saturday (Jan. 09).
According to Jayaratne, drugs, and narcotics worth Rs. 140 million were seized by Sri Lanka Customs in 2019.
There is an increasing trend of narcotics being smuggled to the country by using courier services, via the Central Mail Exchange, he noted.
“This is due to restrictions on movement imposed in line with the COVID-19 pandemic, where drug smugglers are encouraged to import and bring down narcotics by using new routes,” Customs Spokesperson Sunil Jayaratne further pointed out.

COLOMBO (News 1st): The eight importers in connection with the consignment of Agricultural Plant Waste imported to the country from Ukraine are currently being questioned, Sri Lanka Customs said on Sunday (Dec. 27).
Further, statements were also recorded from intermediary entities connected to the incident.
According to Sri Lanka Customs Spokesperson – Sunil Jayaratne, scientific investigations are underway in order to identify the content of the 28 freight containers.
“When the containers were opened to conduct investigations, a strong odour similar to that of spirits was present; therefore, a decision was reached to determine the exact contents of the agricultural plant waste,” Sunil Jayaratne, the Customs Spokesperson said on Sunday (Dec. 27).

COLOMBO (News 1st): Sri Lanka Customs expects to conduct a proper scientific investigation into the content of the “Agricultural Plant Waste” consignment imported to the country from Ukraine, Customs officials said on Saturday (Dec. 26).
“Further investigations with regard to the 28 freight containers of Agricultural Plant Waste from Ukraine, are still ongoing,” Customs Spokesperson – Sunil Jayaratne told News 1st.
The consignment was sent from AGRONIKA TRADE in Ukraine, in the guise of Coriander seeds.
“The investigation will specifically focus on an intermediary individual involved in the importation process, as all the eight importers connected to the incident have claimed they are victims of fraud and were deceived,” Sunil Jayaratne, the Customs Spokesperson further noted.
