The Chinese government on Tuesday (April 13) issued a ban on “ugly architecture ”, nearly seven years after President Xi Jinping famously criticised the “weird” buildings popping up across China in recent decades.
As China has experienced rapid urbanisation over the past 40 years, numerous projects turned out to be eyesores – from the “giant trousers” structure of the China Central Television headquarters in Beijing to the half-Temple of Heaven, half-US Capitol building in nearby Hebei province.
The National Development and Reform Commission, China’s top economic planner, issued a directive earlier this week that said “the construction of ugly architecture should be strictly banned”.

What do you think 2021 will hold for interior design?
So 2021 is going to be a very interesting year. Can’t wait. As soon as we can stop thinking HANDS, FACE, SPACE.
There’s talk of a resurgence of the 1920s which feels like the positivity we need. It was the age of leisure, the age of travel. The Art Deco scene came out of this. People were flamboyant and free to travel. Some of my favourite interiors in the world came from that period. Grand Central Station (well, 1913 to be precise), Eltham Palace, the beauty of combined modern styles with fine craftsmanship and rich materials. The key thing though with interior design, is that it has to be an experience. So what’s going to happen next year in the world of environments in 2021, what are we going to see and what are we to expect?

Taipei, Jan. 2 (CNA) Taipei Performing Arts Center (TPAC), a landmark for art events in Taiwan, has been selected by CNN Style, a website that mainly covers design and architecture topics, as one of the transformative buildings set to shape the world in 2021. The eye-catching building with its planet-like sphere protruding from one side will undoubtedly serve as a contemporary landmark for the Taiwanese capital, the U.S. media outlet said of TPAC, which was designed by Dutch architectural firm OMA.
