化石は来馬層群寺谷層から2009年までに計4点が発見された。大きさは直径約5～8センチ。08年から同館の中田健太郎研究員らが国内で発見されたアンモナイトの化石を調査する中で、他の同属の化石などと比較したところ、殻の巻き方が緩く、表面の線状の模様がはっきりしていながら不規則であることなどの特徴から新種と判明した。
同時代の海では、首長竜のプレシオサウルスなどが生息していた。アマルチウス・オリエンタリスの発見は同時代の海洋環境を解明する上で重要な史料になるといい、中田研究員は「アマルチウス属以外にも来馬層からは化石が見つかっている。かなりの多様性を持っていたアンモナイトの群集が存在していたのではないかということが少しずつ分かってきており、もっと明らかにしていきたい」と話
