After Jackson County s announcement Friday that it was lifting mask requirements, several area school districts responded over the weekend by lifting mask requirements for the remainder of the school year.
The Blue Springs, Fort Osage, Grain Valley, Lee’s Summit school districts all dropped mask requirements for the last couple weeks of the school year, regardless of vaccination status, citing in messages sent to district families that the county had dropped its requirement. The Independence School District will maintain masks for the last two weeks of school.
Amid those announcements, the CDC clarified Saturday that it recommends schools should continue COVID-19 guidelines, including masks and social distancing, for the remainder of the school year, as most students are not fully vaccinated. The CDC had said Thursday that fully vaccinated people could dispense wearing masks indoors and outdoors, unless otherwise

SUMMIT, NJ After a Summit teacher who lives in Morristown was charged earlier this week in connection with producing child pornography, the principal and vice principal of Summit Middle School sent a letter to parents whose kids would have been at Washington Elementary School while the teacher was there. The letter gave suggestions about how to discuss the situation with children.
Superintendent Scott Hough had said in a statement Tuesday that the Summit School District has placed Steven Brooks, 34, a former fifth grade teacher at Washington Elementary School, on leave. The FBI had told officials the incidents surrounding the allegations didn t happen on school property or involve Summit students.

Feb. 12 The worst weather conditions of this winter so far will descend upon Kansas City this weekend, with wind chills falling to -20 degrees overnight and bouts of snow likely, according to FOX4 meteorologist Karli Ritter. It is cold this morning, bitterly cold in fact and we have wind chill advisories that are going to be in effect until noon today, said Ritter, who provide weather updates to The Star.
Shortly before 7 a.m. the temperature fell to 1 degree at Kansas City International Airport. When you factored in a 13 mph wind, the wind chill value was -17 degrees.
