Second-generation pressman Aric Frydendall has witnessed firsthand the many changes in the newspaper industry over the past 40-plus years.
He grew up in the business. His father, Marion Friday Frydendall, was a legendary pressman for The Register-Guard newspaper spanning 39 years starting in 1966. He eventually became pressroom foreman and passed the trade down to his son. The elder Frydendall retired a few years back and continues to live in Eugene.
The younger Frydendall reminisced about his 34-year career at The Register-Guard during a press run for one of last editions of the paper to be printed in Eugene. The last pages will roll off the press Sunday as Gannett, the owners of the paper since a merger with Gatehouse Media in 2020, moves printing and packaging duties to the Columbian Publishing Co. in Vancouver, Washington.
