State Department of Education Announces Expanded Summer Student Learning Opportunities

May 6, 2021 at 7:05 am Hawai‘i State Department of Education (HIDOE) schools will offer a comprehensive menu of summer programming aimed at addressing the learning needs of students as they transition back to full in-person learning and prepare for the 2021-22 school year. “Schools have worked hard to design programs of high interest for vulnerable students who have been less engaged during the pandemic as well as enrichment programs for students seeking to try new things and explore new interests,” said Superintendent Dr. Christina Kishimoto in a press release. In addition to traditional summer school, the Department is offering summer learning opportunities via the models described below.

mtanji@mauinews.com As Maui County public schools prepare to offer in-person summer programs, other popular child care programs like Summer PALS are still mulling their plans during the pandemic. Baldwin High School is one of 15 sites statewide and the only one in the Maui district that plans to have traditional, in-person summer classes for public and non-public school students, state Department of Education officials said in an email last week. High schoolers were also given an option for online courses. The online registration site on Monday showed that courses were full, but students could join a waitlist.
