The MP government has sought four Army columns for rescue ops
BHOPAL: Floodwaters are raging through Gwalior-Chambal region, claiming at least three lives and marooning lakhs. Sheopur town has turned into an island, cut off from the rest of the country and without power or mobile network since Monday.
Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan spoke twice with PM Narendra Modi about the flood and told him that more than 2,000 people have been rescued. The MP government has sought four Army columns while NDRF and SDRF teams are already fighting through raging rivers to save lives in more than 1,100 villages that are completely cut off. Air Force choppers winched and flew dozens to safety. Shivpuri and Sheopur received 800mm rain in just two days. “It seemed as if the clouds had burst. This unprecedented rainfall led to the floods,” said CM Chouhan.

Defence aircraft on Monday launched rescue operations to evacuate people stranded in some flooded villages in Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh as heavy rains continued to lash large parts of the state, especially Shivpuri and neighbouring Sheopur districts, leaving two people dead, officials said.
