As the collector’s market pushes the prices of once-accessible vintage dive watches from more famous houses beyond the pockets of most mortals (hello, Tudor), an interesting trend has developed: to go obscure and hunt for the lesser-known (but no less worthy) specialist dive watch brands, many of which succumbed to the quartz revolution of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. But one in particular, Certina, didn’t actually die out at all; it just went away for a bit.

The manufacture turns out very short runs of unusually beautiful and very expensive watches, almost all of which, in some form or another, are an oblique, often-amusing comment on the state of Swiss watchmaking, an industry not widely celebrated for its sense of humor.

Zenith has been paralleling bold new watch designs of late with faithful updates of special moments from its past, particularly the aftermath in the early 70s of the creation of its groundbreaking El Primero movement, the first automatic capable of powering a chronograph.
