The burgeoning vintage and pre-loved fashion industry has been making moves. 2020, in particular, has thrust it to top-drawer status. According to ThredUp’s 2020 Resale Report, conducted by GlobalData, the second-hand market is set to hit $64 billion in the next five years. Resale is expected to overtake the traditional thrift and donation segment by 2024, with online platforms showing the biggest growth in popularity. The ‘old is gold’ adage has shiny new significance once again. It doesn’t hurt that it’s kinder on the planet too.
And while re-commerce is the industry’s way forward, India is no stranger to the concept of pre-loved fashion. We grow up wearing (and passing on) hand-me-downs–saris inherited from your nani, dresses that were once your sister’s, and accessories saved for your nieces. It’s par for the course in one’s sartorial journey.
