Suicide knows no specific group. It is complex and is rarely caused by a single factor or event. There is no socio-economic, racial, or geographical boundary. It always leaves behind emotionally tormented survivors.
in iraq and afghanistan. it can be financial issues, it can be relationship issues. suicide preventions which is our number one priority, there s really no one thing that tends to cause veterans to make that irreversible decision. it usually is a conglomeration of things. when we talk to policymakers on capitol hill, at the va, we really try to, you know, convey that they need to take a more holistic approach to to suicide prevention. it s not just mental health approach and we need to capture those veterans that may or may not be struggling before they get to that point. alicia: and we do have some numbers here that we can put up. this is the report, va2021 report on veteran suicide and it s on the rise. 2001 on average per day you had 16.4 veterans taking their own lives. in 2019 it had climbed to 17.2.
cover capitol hill and there has been no movement there really within the senate to do anything about gun violence. people out in communities kind of wring their hands over it and say, what do we do in our own community? it seems nebulous, this idea of what do you do to prevent mass shootings. is there anything you can narrow this down to that can be done, that s a tangible thing that can be done? i think there are things that we can do and i wrote a book about this that s coming out in september. we can think about, certainly, we need congress to make decisions and to make things happen, but there are things we can do as individuals and as institutions within schools and workplaces. so things like warm, welcoming environments, things like connecting with people, crisis intervention and suicide preventions. sometimes i think about people being a balloon, just full of air, ready to burst with all of the pain and trauma and crisis and everything they ve been through and what can we do

BATAVIA, IL The year 2020 has been one of the worst on record for people across the world and in Batavia. But now, with Illinois on the road to vaccination, an end could soon be in sight.
This Monday, Batavia residents are invited to join their neighbors in bidding adieu to 2020, The Longest Night.
The event is organized by the Batavia Ministerial Association, Batavia Chamber of Commerce, Batavia Access Television (BATV), Batavia Counselors Collaboration and Suicide Preventions Services.

And, participation in The Longest Night is simple: Residents on Monday are asked to step outside their homes at 6 p.m. and light a candle, ring a bell or sound a horn.
