Kyrgyzstan said it yesterday reached a ceasefire with Tajikistan, following the latest lethal flare-up at the Central Asian neighbors’ contested border.
The fighting, which broke out late on Thursday, was the bloodiest escalation between the countries since clashes that killed dozens last year.
Kyrgyz and Tajik communities along the contested border regularly clash over land and water supplies, with border guards often involved.
Tajikistan late on Thursday said that it had suffered “civilian and military” fatalities from the most recent exchanges of fire, but offered no further details.

Tajikistan's Health Ministry has consistently reported low levels of COVID-19 in the country, or no cases at all in some months, raising concerns that authorities are downplaying the pandemic's impact. The armed conflict of last week between the armed forces of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan is the culmination of years of low-level violence. While having an impact on the development, prosperity, and security of border communities and local villagers, these limited confrontations have not directly affected relations between the two countries. However, with some 50 dead, hundreds of injured, and thousands of displaced people, the current conflict could become a turning point not just in their bilateral dealings, but also and especially in the construction of a regional order in Central Asia.
BACKGROUND: Between April 28 and May 1, a violent armed conflict erupted between the armed forces of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan near the Golovnoy water distribution point in Kok-Tash village of Batken region, located at the source of the water canals replenishing Tortkul reservoir on the territory of Kyrgyzstan.
