An indulgent and careless woman who sparked a major health emergency in south-east Queensland last year after dodging the state s border rules while infected with COVID-19 has been sentenced to 40 hours of community service after pleading guilty to a downgraded charge.

Olivia Muranga and two friends travelled to Melbourne to holiday last July, when all of Victoria was a declared coronavirus hotspot.
When the trio flew back to Queensland via Sydney, they lied to health officials about their travel history and falsified their border documentation in an attempt to avoid mandatory hotel quarantine.

Olivia Muranga, 20, lied on her border declaration pass when returning from coronavirus-riddled Melbourne last year, claiming she had not been in a COVID hotspot. While unknowingly infected with the virus, Muranga attended her work as a cleaner at a school and visited restaurants which Police Prosecutor Lisa Pye said had a knock on effect, causing the school and businesses to be closed for cleaning.
