Noida: For the second year in a row, Akshay Tritiya has turned out to be a dull day for jewellers in Noida. The jewellers’ association on Friday reported only around Rs 5cr worth sales in the entire day, a figure that’s just 10% as compared to 2019. Last year too, sales dipped due to the Covid-19 lockdown.
Noida has 172 jewellers and till 2019, the city jewellers registered sales worth Rs 50 crore on Akshay Tritiya. Jewellers told TOI that most of the sales were through digital bookings or personal contacts, with offline sales being a washout. Nationally, pre-Covid jewellery sales on Akshay Tritiya are usually recorded at around 25-30 tonnes of gold, which this year has barely touched three tonnes, jewellers said. “Last year too, we barely had any sales because of the lockdown, and this year too the markets are shut. We did sell some gold coins through our online stores, but the entire Noida market made about Rs 5 crore on Friday, which is just 10% of our regular sales,” sa
