public opinion polling. when you talk to republican aides on the hill, there is a lot of skepticism there, at least that is my take so far that s right. in the short-term, everything depends on how persistent president trump is. you re not going to get them to move, especially on the senate level unless there is clear and consistent guidance and they believe he is not going to swerve. he came out for red flag laws. backed off all of that. they have moved in a major way. the suburbs especially have moved. suburban moms, college educated voters are more in favor of gun control than we have seen in a long time. that is what is driving the democrats s shift in favor of gun control laws. president obama avoided it in in 2008 and 2012. democrats had a majority in 2007 and 2011. they didn t touch this. the rural areas still oppose gun
the federal government has influence. they have influence in terms of common core. it s the national governor s association in 2009 that says there s a need to do something and make changes about education. the national governor s association is the one that came up with the common core state standards. lets talk about that specifically. the governors and their feeling united they needed to make this overhaul. why? they looked around at the numbers. the numbers were not good in terms of what was happening with our kids in schools. we re failing, essentially. they found it s not just a low in come, poor, minority issue, it was happening across the country. they said our competition is global. we ve got to do better than what we re doing. is this where we got the arne dungeon quote, suburban moms, all of a sudden their child isn t as brilliant as they thought they were and their school wasn t as good as they thought it was and that s scary. trying to make certain people
suburban moms. but if you look at what s happened at the legislative agenda so far, you still have a republican house that doesn t care about the obama coalition. they weren t elected by these folks. they re not having to be held accountable in that way. i think from 2010 to today, we actually have one big player that is not actually backing a lot of the tea party, and that s the media. the media for more than anything has actually backed away from supporting a lot of these candidates. i think folks on the conservative side have realized it s not good business. number two, what s going to motivate the voters in 2014 is a lot of the local legislative fights that are happening. when you start talking about gun control, yes, but then you start looking at this whole rash of legislations that are against a woman s right to choose. more than anything, that s what s mobilized people. so the more they can go and start talking about local legislative races and how this is definitely still ver
