daughter on substandard care she received while in ice custody. the toddler died six weeks after being released from an emigration facility in texas. that s where her mother claims the little girl contracted a respiratory infection and wasn t given adequate treatment. joining me, nick valencia who has the latest. this mother and her 18-month-old daughter asking for asylum from guatemala. they were fleeing gang violence hoping for a better life here in the united states. they were detained and transferred to the south texas family residential center in south texas. what the family and attorney allege happened is absolutely awful. here is a time line of what the attorney provided to us saying that in the course of the three weeks, a few days after arriving, they were detained by ice. the little girl showed no health problems. two weeks later, she had symptoms of a respiratory infection. she was given meds. it didn t improve her condition. it seemed her condition only
that they had while being detained here. again, this facility is denying the allegations of abuse and assault. tonight, virginia s governor is ordering a state investigation into the allegations here. as he should. i understand you had a chance to speak with a guard who used to work there. what did he tell you? reporter: that s right. the guard did not want to give us his name. he did not want to go on camera. he worked here two years up until 2016. he said he did not witness the physical abuse detailed in the allegations. he did hear a complaint from one child of a racial insult. what he did tell us is that while he was here, this place was vastly understaffed and the employees were overwhelmed. thank you very much. joining us now, a texas congressman, a democrat who serves on the armed services committee. thanks for joining us. i know you visited some of the locations in texas, your home
things have changed. now we don t know that on the most fundamental level, which is, will they no longer separate families? we don t know that they re not separating families anymore, we just know what trump has said. and we don t know how they will reunite. we do know, wolf, that the trump administration went to a court today to ask a judge for more time to hold kids in detention. that would be an end run around the flores agreement people are talking about, the settlement of a case that was done in 1997. that s exactly what we don t want is kids held longer. because of the potential for abuse and damage to them. so we are not done in this situation. in fact, the worst could still be ahead. i know the president s former campaign manager, corey lewandowski, shocked so many of us by apparently mocking a 10-year-old girl with down syndrome who was separated from her parent. i understand he s going to be your guest one on one later tonight.
when they came into our care, and they were assessed by our clinical and case management staff, they didn t necessarily meet those they weren t necessarily identified as gang involved individuals. reporter: the facility faces charges including verbal and physical abuse, substandard care, excessive use of solitary confinement, conditions that result in suffering. the residents here are among thousands of undocumented minors trapped in a secret web of shelters and detention facilities. some of whom entered when obama was president. it s unlikely that any entered since president trump instituted a zero tolerance policy. many of them are unaccompanied but others rr tawere taken fromr parents while crossing the border or later. a psychologist who examined the accounts of several minors held at this facility said it s likely many will never fully recover from the experiences
welcome back. good morning. two marines, a captain and a master sergeant, have now been relieved duty, disciplined after an explosion that left four fellow marines dead during a training exercise at camp pendleton. the investigation into that accident last year said the explosion was probably the result of a dropped or kicked grenade as the marines gathered up unexploded ordinates. the two marines disciplined were in charge of that exercise. this morning, we re seeing the impact of those tough, new, abortion restrictions in texas. two more texas abortion clinics are closing their doors because they say no hospital would give their doctors admitting privileges, as required. backers say the rules crack down on dangerous, substandard care. opponents say they re designed to shutter these clinics.
