Synopsis Asthana, a 1984 batch IPS officer of Gujarat cadre, was CBI’s erstwhile second-in-command when a tiff had broken out between Asthana and the then CBI Director Alok Verma. An FIR was registered against Asthana, the then special CBI Director when Verma was the CBI Director.

The Centre has convened a meeting of the high-powered search committee to choose the new director of the Central Bureau of Investigation on May 24, it is learnt. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India Justice NV Ramana and Congress Lok Sabha floor leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury are the members of the committee.
While informing the members about the date of the meeting, a long list of probables for the CBI chief’s post too has been attached with. Official sources said the list has very senior IPS officers including interim CBI director Praveen Sinha, BSF and Narcotics Control Bureau chief Rakesh Asthana, NIA chief YC Modi, CISF chief Subodh Kant Jaiswal, recently in the news as then head of the Maharashtra Police, ITBP
