An Oregon state lawmaker likely tried to pressure former romantic partners over whom he had professional sway to become involved with him again, a nine-month-long independent investigation found, according to reports. State lawmakers in Salem could decide as early as next week if state Rep. Diego Hernandez, D-Portland, violated the congressional sexual harassment policy, Oregon Public Broadcasting first reported. The report, issued Monday, will be presented to the House Committee on Conduct, where Hernandez says he supports an effective review of credible allegations but claimed that conduct rules are often politicized with cases tried in the press.

Diego Hernandez found the East Portland lawmaker likely created a hostile work environment at the state Capitol for two women, according to an internal investigation into the representative’s behavior that was recently provided to OPB. Both women had brief, consensual romantic relationships with Hernandez. Both women, according to the investigation, tried to end those relationships but found it wasn’t easy. Rather, they felt Hernandez’s behaviors forced them into making a difficult choice: they could either resume a relationship with Hernandez or risk jeopardizing their careers.
