Covid curfew violation: Tripura DM shunted over wedding raids

The BJP-led Tripura government has transferred a district magistrate following an order from the high court to ensure an impartial probe into his role in last week’s “unfortunate storming and raiding” of two wedding functions in Agartala for allegedly violating the night curfew imposed to check the spread of Covid-19. A video of Agartala-based West district magistrate Shailesh Kumar Yadav’s high-handed action to stop the weddings had been shared widely, attracting widespread condemnation and three writ petitions seeking action against the official. Yadav was transferred on Wednesday to Belonia as the South Tripura district magistrate, around 100km from state capital Agartala.

Image Source: IANS News Agartala, May 5 : The Tripura government on Wednesday transferred IAS officer Shailesh Kumar Yadav for his alleged high-handedness in dealing with people at two marriage halls in Agartala recently amidst the night curfew imposed to curb the alarming rise in Covid cases, officials said. A General Administrations Department official said that Yadav, who was on Sunday removed from West Tripura District Magistrate, has been transferred to South Tripura in the same capacity. South Tripura District Magistrate Debapriya Bardhan has been shifted to Gomati district.

AGARTALA: Prodded by the high court of Tripura, the state government on Wednesday transferred former district magistrate Sailesh Kumar Yadav, who forcibly stopped a wedding ceremony while enforcing Covid-19 protocol last month, out of West Tripura where he was posted. Yadav, who allegedly manhandled invitees, the groom and the priest during the ceremony held at Agartala, was released from his post following his request as a departmental inquiry was on against him. Hearing petitions in connection with the incident, a division bench comprising Chief Justice A Kureshi and Justice S G Chattopadhyay asked the Advocate General Siddhartha Shankar De what action was initiated by the government so far against him.
