Assam: Vax drive for 18+ age group begins as state logs most deaths in a day | Guwahati News

GUWAHATI: After a four-day delay, vaccination for the 18-44 age group began in Assam on Wednesday, even as the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic is turning out to be deadlier for the state. Altogether 55 Covid-related deaths were reported on Wednesday, the highest recorded in a single day since the Coronavirus outbreak last year, health officials said. Specially abled youths (Divyangs) and journalists below 45 got their first jabs on the first day. Though the ceremonious beginning was limited to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) and Guwahati Press Club here, state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the drive to vaccinate the 18+ category would be in full swing from May 7.

GUWAHATI: A freight train, which was allegedly travelling at a high speed, mowed down an elephant calf, at Gogamukh in upper Assam’s Lakhimpur district on Saturday night. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has started a departmental probe into the matter while the state department has launched a probe into the incident. The forest department has registered a case regarding the matter. Chief public relations officer of NFR Subhanan Chanda told TOI that the incident took place on Saturday night when a herd of wild elephants was crossing the railway tracks between Baghjan and Sarkarijan. “The herd was moving from Dullung Reserve Forest under Pathalipam Forest Beat towards the hills of Arunachal Pradesh. They were moving within the elephant range and got hit by the train which was coming from Silapathar to Rangia. We have initiated investigation and a case has been registered,” Dibakar Dey, DFO Lakhimpur, told TOI.

URL copied Earth falls on workers during railway construction work in Assam, 2 killed Two workers were killed and four others injured when earth fell on them at a Road Under Bridge (RUB) construction site in the GuwahatiLumding section of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) on Saturday, an official said. Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Chief Public Relation Officer (CPRO) Subhanan Chanda said that the incident took place when the concrete slabs were being placed after the earth-cutting by the engaged staffs of the contractor in between Panbari-Thakurkuchi stations in the Guwahati-Lumding section under Lumding Division. He said that at the time of placement of concrete slabs, the earth fell down on labourers who were working in the area and nine people got trapped in the incident seven of whom were rescued with the help of local authorities but in the meantime two others died on the spot.
