In light of
th anniversary of the establishment of the New Partnership for Africa s Development (
NEPAD) coming up in July, now is the perfect time to take a fresh look at socio-economic advancement on our continent.
The world is in turmoil: politically, socially and economically. The COVID-19 pandemic has widened some of the cracks in society at large, and the African continent has certainly not been spared any of it.
Although our continent has many challenges, we also have certain things in our favour. Let me mention just two. We have a habit of “leapfrogging to the latest technologies and approaches to not only keep up with the rest of the world, but take the lead. And there is already plenty of cooperation taking place on both the geopolitical level and within sectors that are crucial for development.

The Council of Stellenbosch University (SU) held its first of four scheduled meetings for the year on Tuesday 13 April 2021. As in December 2020, we again met in hybrid mode, with some members gathering on campus (observing all COVID-19 protocols) and others participating online.
SU did extremely well in trying circumstances last year, having completed
the 2020 academic year successfully despite a rapid switch to online mode when contact tuition was suspended nationwide in March. In the end, no fewer than 9 079
qualifications were awarded to students from all backgrounds, including 270 doctoral degrees – among the highest of all universities in South Africa.

The first cohort of Stellenbosch University graduates, SU faculty and corporate employees successfully completed the first 6-week programme of the newly established SU Techpreneurship Centre in March this year. At the end of the program, 90% of SU graduates were interviewed by local technology companies, and 70% of them were offered full-time internships. The Techpreneurship Centre is creating a valuable link between academia and exciting South African technology companies.
The SU Techpreneurship Centre is a new data science and entrepreneurial development upskilling initiative developed by the SU LaunchLab, the University s technology and entrepreneurship incubator, in collaboration with the SU School for Data Science and Computational Thinking, intending to provide participants with industry-relevant technology and entrepreneurship skills.
