Inside Lantz Design: Barry and Amanda Lantz Tackle Art, Design, and Now, Textiles

Kravet You ve likely heard the term painterly used to describe a fabric pattern, but nowhere is that adjective more apt than on this new line of textiles from Carmel, Indiana–based Lantz Collective for Kravet. Lantz Collective is comprised of father-daughter duo Barry and Amanda Lantz, who have been working together for five years, after Amanda joined Barry at the firm he d run for decades (oh, and they have a store, too!). In addition to outfitting interiors, Barry is also a prolific artist, painting abstract canvases in bright, saturated colors. Now, with the help of Amanda, he s translating these artworks into fabric in the aptly-titled Canvas to Cloth collection for Kravet.

“The pandemic was an alert, reminding us to reflect on whether we are on the right path. With the cancellation of our performances, our busy daily schedules were replaced with back-up plans. My dancers and I had more time to truly slow down and create. We took second thoughts on things we were accustomed to: does this need to be changed? How can we change it? We prepared, trained our bodies more delicately and quietly, and thus explored the true nature of the art form of dance. The world is evolving towards a more digital era, which is very good. However, we should also recognise our bodies and emotions more deeply and thoroughly in order to remain true to ourselves.”

Born and raised in Ecuador, Juan Miguel Marin didn’t always know that he would build a life in art. As a child he was more interested in music and sports, though he was exposed to painting through the Oswaldo Guayasamín lithographs that hung on the walls of his family home, and to cinema through the video rental store that his father ran. It wasn’t until he relocated to North Carolina and studied graphic design that he began to focus on his talent for image-making, a decision that paved the way for the thriving career he has now.
