SCS, parents seek ways to end bullying
By Melanie Speicher - mspeicher@sidneydailynews.com
SIDNEY What is the solution to remove bullying from Sidney City Schools? That was the question asked by community members during Monday’s Sidney City Schools Board of Education meeting at Sidney High School.
Sidney Police Chief Will Balling said bullying is not a new problem in schools or communities. He said the addition of social media to the situation is causing even more problems.
“We need to work together as a community and talk about these issues. It’s not going to be solved overnight.”
District investigates claims
SIDNEY Emotions are running high in Sidney as allegations have surfaced on Facebook concerning bullying within Sidney City Schools.
In a letter to the community published in Friday’s newspaper Superintendent Bob Humble called for the establishment of a Student Wellness Task Force to help overcome the bullying of students. One student attempted suicide this week because of the alleged bullying by students and staff.
After reading the allegations concerning staff members, Humble and the district conducted an investigation into the claims.
“Sidney City Schools has investigated claims made on Facebook about staff and at this point, we have not found any evidence to substantiate any claims regarding specific staff members. We will continue our efforts to better understand this situation from a school district level,” said Humble.
Humble reaches out to parents, students
Superintendent Bob Humble has sent a letter to all parents of students in the district.
“Sidney City Schools has been made aware of an attempted suicide of one of our students. This is something we take very seriously. While this is a fragile situation, our district’s administration is reaching out to the family of the student to gather more information to ensure student wellness. We ask that you please keep this student in your thoughts and prayers,” wrote Humble.
“If you’re thinking about suicide, are worried about a friend or loved one, or would like emotional support, the following national resources can be used,” he continued:
