UC Berkeley must fund critical software licenses for students

For Kenneth Lien, campus sophomore and executive director of Cal Hacks, the failed renewal of the Student Technology Fee, or STF, during the ASUC elections in April is a “loss of a safety net.” Without the STF a campus-based student fee referendum that provided all UC Berkeley students with equitable access to a range of technology services Lien said he will no longer have access to a Wi-Fi hot spot and laptop that he relied on to take virtual classes during the pandemic, which was lent to him by Moffitt Library. “The fund really made success; it gave everyone equal opportunity and removed technology from being a barrier to excelling in school,” Lien said. “It’s unfortunate that the fund didn’t get renewed, especially because I personally and a lot of my peers have been able to continue school and handle a virtual transition because of it.”

ASUC Judicial Council delays certification, Elections Council certifies result

Throughout the course of a week following the preliminary tabulation event, the ASUC Elections Council certified the results of the referendums from the 2021 ASUC elections, which remain to be certified by the ASUC Judicial Council amid conflicting ASUC bylaws and UC Berkeley policies. At its Monday meeting, the Elections Council certified the passage of the proposition titled Protecting the Checks and Balances of the ASUC Constitution. In accordance with campus policy on referendum fees, the three remaining propositions the Graduate Assembly Fee, Student Technology Fee and Daily Cal Initiative did not pass. Both the Elections Council and Judicial Councils must certify election results for them to be deemed final.
