Today Campus Recreation announced the Student Rec Center will begin a gradual reopening on Monday, May 17. For the past year, itâs served as one of the Universityâs primary facilities for COVID-19 testing and vaccinations.
Now that its testing and vaccination clinics are wrapping up, the Rec Center is ready to offer recreational services to students once again.
âWe recognize that there may be some things not available yet and procedures may seem more restrictive than anyone would like but we are navigating through various limitations and external guidance to provide the safest environment possible and we will continue to seek clearance to roll out expanded and streamlined access whenever possible,â Campus Recreation said in an email.

West Virginia University announced Tuesday many COVID-19 restrictions previously in effect will be significantly reduced when students return to campus for the fall 2021 semester,
Many of the restrictions will operate on a sliding scale, dependent on the vaccination rate for students, faculty and staff. WVU said members of the campus community must confirm vaccination through an online portal and the goal is to reach an 80% vaccination rate.Â
âOur best defense against COVID-19 is for everyone to get vaccinated,â The University wrote in a press release. âStriving for community immunity allows us to begin to open our campuses and resume activities and events.â

Ben Pravecek, a 20-year-old business student from Harpers Ferry, passed away last Friday, April 16, following a fall off of the University Avenue parking garage.
Pravecek enjoyed painting, spending time with his girlfriend and hanging out with his fraternity brothers.
Malloch Henderson, one of Pravecekâs close friends, shared some of his favorite memories.
âHe was very off the wall,â Henderson said. âHe had a lot of little niche hobbies and things that he liked that were very unique to him, and he was pretty fearless when it came to doing anything.â
Pravecek also loved origami, according to Henderson. He had a tattoo of an origami crane, right by his heart, and he used to fold origami cranes freshman year for other people.Â

On Tuesday, the University announced it would pause administration of Johnson & Johnsonâs Janssen COVID-19 vaccine based on a recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).Â
The CDC and FDA made the joint recommendation out of an abundance of caution after six reported U.S. cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot where found in individuals after receiving the vaccination.Â
