UAW-GSOC ends NYU graduate student strike, fraudulently presenting it as a “historic victory”
On Friday afternoon, the Graduate Student Organizing Committee (GSOC), which is affiliated with the United Auto Workers (UAW), officially ended the strike of over 2,000 New York University (NYU) graduate student workers. The workers were striking for living wages, health care coverage and better working conditions.

While the wording of the tentative agreement is still being worked out, the union moved quickly to shut down the strike in time for graduate students to be back on the clock during finals week at the university that is, exactly when graduate student workers are most needed to complete grading. As a result, the actual impact of the strike on NYU will have been minimal.

With the strike by 2,000 New York University graduate student workers in its third week, the Graduate Student Organizing Committee (GSOC), which is affiliated with the United Auto Workers (UAW) union, is preparing to shut down the strike with a tentative agreement, which they claim is a “huge win.” In fact, the labor agreement will cost NYU virtually nothing and fails to address the most critical demands for substantial improvements in wages, health care and child care benefits.

NYU graduate student strike enters second week as GSOC-UAW makes concessions
A strike by New York University graduate students for higher wages, tuition waivers and better health care and protection for immigrant and international students has now entered its second week with the Graduate Student Organizing Committee (GSOC), affiliated with the United Auto Workers, already abandoning key demands.
It is apparent that the NYU administration is pressing for a full capitulation by the GSOC-UAW.

The university administration is clearly waiting for the end of the semester, which will be over next week at NYU, in the confident expectation that the GSOC-UAW will sell out on all the major demands advanced by students.
