reporter: where were you when the shooting began, i should ask. i was a couple classrooms down from where the shooting occurred. reporter: so what did you hear? i heard two loud but muffled shots, what i believed were helium balloons popping. i ran out the door of the classroom because i thought it was another one of my students giving a demonstration. unfortunately i was coming across him. i walked into the hallway and saw a classmate of mine running frantically that someone had been shot and to lock down the building. so i had to go back inside the classroom and tell the rest of the students to conduct this as if it were a test. reporter: one individual entered the school with a shotgun, proceeded to fire several rounds. a student monitor who works inside of that facility observed
their halls there. officers responded at approximately 3:27. and they were able to make entry at that point. and we found out subsequently that one individual had entered the school with a shotgun, proceeded to fire several rounds. a student monitor who works inside of that facility overed the suspect reloading a shotgun and was able to stop the individual that point. pepper sprayed that person. then got them to the ground where other people inside of the facility were able to subdue him. and they waited for police to arrive. once the officers were on the scene, they went in, able to take the individual into custody. and then cleared the rest of the facility. there were a lot of other student that were hiding. thanks to seattle pacific
students. the first who stepped in, john mease. a student monitor was able to stop the individual at that point, pepper sprayed that person, then got them to the ground. reporter: students left reeling just a week before their final exams. so today should have been a day of celebration at the end of the school year here at seattle pacific university, instead it s a day of tragedy and of loss. reporter: well, it is another heartbreaking situation. but everyone is so thankful that that student had the presence of mind to grab the pepper spray. that is the person who everyone is calling a hero. we ll send it back to you. he absolutely is. the death toll could have been much higher. i m sure there s still a lot of mourning going on for the ones
reloading. police say that ibarra is preparing for more bloodshed when he was taken down by 22-year-old john meese. a student monitor who works inside of the facility observed the suspect reloading the shotgun. he pepper sprayed that person and then got them to the ground. i looked down from my office and i saw one of my students sitting on top of somebody in a big pile of shell casings. reporter: police say that ibarra is not a student, and they don t have a motive. a small christian college, and today, the 4,300 students at seattle pacific are grieving and praying together. a deadly shooting, a senseless crime and an act of heroism that may have saved many lives. one student remains in critical condition, and the other is in satisfactory condition, and the 26-year-old gunman will face charges later on in the day, and
