in washington that matters. but the bottom line is they want more access to government contracts, to government research projects. they want there are any number of agencies that spend man at institutions around the country. and the hbcus want a bigger piece of that. they also want the changes to student loan programs because so many of their students are dependent on financial aid. this was a criticism during the obama years that were changes that hurt black and minority students at these schools. education secretary bets eide voss i want to ask you about backlash she is getting for a statement she made after meeting with several of the presidents of hbcus. this is a part of the statement. she said hbcus are real pioneers when it comes to school choice. living proof when more options are provided to students they are afforded greater access and greater quality. the part of that that i think is getting attention, ron you know better than i do she ignores the fact these schools
unions coming out and opposing her. there is going to be questions from elizabeth warren. she sent a lengthy letter to devos asking about her views on higher education for example, and how she might manage student loan programs that are overseen by the federal government. as you know that s been a big issue for senator warren and other progressives who stan on a platform for free education for all americans. i think you are going to be seeing focus on that as well. it hasn t been escalated to the number of votes that would stop her from becoming secretary of education. there are other nominees that have more controversy than betsy devos but i do expect to hear some angry lines of questioning in this hearing. potentially some protesters. thank you so must have. we will take a closer look at the education secretary later in our show and watching both of hearings as they go on. for more on the other big
university and author of why government fails so often. good morning to you, peter. okay, so why does government fail so often? there are a lot of reasons. their incentives create the wrong incentives for people to do things. the v.a., for example. the idea to raise the numbers rather than to serve people well and on time. sometimes programs are designed to fail. the farm subsidies program, for example, everybody knows the money is going to the wrong people but they have very strong interests in washington that are well protected. sometimes the programs are, they create moral hazard. the student loan programs are a perfect example. delinquency rates are extremely high. it is obvious the people receiving these loans often have no assets and very poor earning future, but the government wants to get
money. lawmakers could wiped up cutting back on other benefits to take care of the student loan programs. but he s been making it a real centerpiece of his administration for a couple of reasons. one, there is concern that as students get out there with a lot of debt they are not helping spend money on buying things like buying a house. randi? a tragic story in australia s remote south. a man was snatched from his boat on sunday by a 15-foot long crocodile. he was pulled from the boat as his family watched in horror. the man s wife had to drive two frantic hours for help and the outcome was tragic. during daylight hours today, the rangers using their expertise found two crocodiles and they were shot and killed. one of those was later examined
