reporter: the plan had been approved for about 16 million americans. and today president biden has decided to extend the repayment moratorium, that freeze on all student loan payments for all federal student loan debt holders while those court challenges continue to play out. and that moratorium was set to expire at the end of this year. here is the president explaining his decision. we re not going to back down in our fight to give families breathing room. that is why the department of justice is asking the supreme court of the united states to rule on the case. but it isn t fair to have tens of millions eligible for relief to resume their student debt payments while the court consider the lawsuit. for that reason the secretary of education is extending the pause while we seek relief from the courts but no later than june 30, 2023. he is, quote, completely confident that this student debt relief forgiveness program is
