gravity. the democrats started off as underdogs. then they had to contend with a string of really bad luck, part of it just the end of the pandemic s worth phase. getting back to normal, they were lingering supply chain issues from the pandemic, led to concerns that very well-documented baby formula shortage. those supply chain issues were also one factor in a record high inflation, which again, was afflicting basically every country across the world. but, you know, you can t tell voters, well, everyone is in the same boat. it really did seem poised to be the single undoing of the biden administration. pardon of that inflation where the enormous high gas prices. another issue for incumbent democrats. republicans, again, this is a political layup. taking every opportunity to talk about the price at the pump and how it s democrats fault. of course, part of the reason gas prices were so high is the biden administration was trying to contend with the largest land war in europ
taxpayers and disproportionately benefit the wealthy. in recent days, there has been considerable bipartisan pushback to the plan. that is now going forward as the country faces record high up beflation. president biden today claiming the plan will have no meaningful affect on inflation but his critics, including some former obama administration officials remain unconvinced. white house correspondent peter doocy starts us off tonight live from the north lawn. good evening, peter. good evening, bret. white house officials say they have no idea how much this plan is actually going to cost because they think there are plenty of eligible student loan debt holders who are going to choose not to go online and tell the government that they want to cancel up to $10,000 in that debt. now it s time to address the burden of student debt. the president s announcement benefits 43 million borrowers including 20 million who will see their student debt totally canceled up to 10,000 in
reporter: the plan had been approved for about 16 million americans. and today president biden has decided to extend the repayment moratorium, that freeze on all student loan payments for all federal student loan debt holders while those court challenges continue to play out. and that moratorium was set to expire at the end of this year. here is the president explaining his decision. we re not going to back down in our fight to give families breathing room. that is why the department of justice is asking the supreme court of the united states to rule on the case. but it isn t fair to have tens of millions eligible for relief to resume their student debt payments while the court consider the lawsuit. for that reason the secretary of education is extending the pause while we seek relief from the courts but no later than june 30, 2023. he is, quote, completely confident that this student debt relief forgiveness program is
they are not using student loan money the way that most americans use it, which is to survive. to pay their bills, to pay their tuition, right? and to get through school. so the idea that there s this substantive group of student loan debt holders that have an extreme amount of wealth and this is a giveaway to them is the kind of political gamesmanship that happens when, i would point out, a party is losing the narrative. you know, despite what we have argued about in the discourse over the last few months, the idea of getting people out from under student loan debt is actually popular, right? this is the party who has lost the popular line with people that they need to turn out and vote. i ve got to say, i was fairly agnostic on this but, you know, whether this would be popular or not, but i think the polling has been consistent, that it is quite popular, and i think that you are right, some of the counter pulling today is because that trustee mcmillan calm. thank you so much, appre
