Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man whose car hit a tree and burst into flames after police deployed spike strips to try and stop him speeding away.
A new father and amateur cage fighter with a lengthy criminal rap sheet has died after he lost control of a car while fleeing from police.
John Beirouti was followed after officers saw him travelling through southeast Melbourne about 3.30am on Sunday in a car which had been linked to an outstanding matter .
The 43-year-old, who was known to police, refused to pull over before two of his tyres were slashed by stop sticks, sending the car spiralling out of control.
He crashed into a tree, which set the car alight.

Christmas eve church attempted burglary
Knox Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for witnesses following an attempted burglary in Rowville on Christmas eve.
It’s believed the unknown offender attempted to gain access to the church on Stud Road around 8.30am on Thursday 24 December.
The offender was disturbed by a person in the church and fled in a white van.
Police have released images of a man and a vehicle they believe may assist them with their enquiries.
The man is described as Caucasian in appearance with balding hair.
