China s approaching demographic crisis: report

China s approaching demographic crisis: report 18 May 2021, 04:27 GMT+10 Beijing [China], May 17 (ANI): Even after postponing the results of the once-in-a-decade census for a month, the Chinese government was unable to fully cover up the alarming demographic situation that the country is facing. According to the seventh nationwide census of 2020, China s population has grown by merely 5.38 percent over the last 10 years. China s birthrate has been on the decline since 2017, despite easing of the one-child policy in order to avert an incoming demographic crisis. Jianli Yang, president of Citizen Power Initiatives for China wrote in American news magazine Newsweek that although there is no established standard for how large a population any given country needs, having more young people than elderly people is beneficial for a country s long-term development.
