A Stroll Through the Garden: Bougainvillea - a tropical wonder

A Stroll Through the Garden: Bougainvillea - a tropical wonder Eric Larson © Submitted Bougainvillea is an ornamental plant found in warmer climates that is becoming more popular in Ohio with the right care. I drove into a parking lot this past week and noticed a bougainvillea in the backseat of a car right beside me. I looked at the plant and I said, Bougainvillea, right? , and the fellow in the front seat said, Yes. The bougainvillea flowers were pink. You know, I noticed there have been more and more tropical plants finding their way here to Ohio. We wondered whether or not a person could grow this tropical plant in Ohio outside during the winter. Since this fellow was a reader of our column, I said OK, with the zone changing recently for the area, maybe we can do some crazy things with more tropical plants.

But now, the goal is to spread the annual Dazzel with Daffodils program from current annual displays along parks, churches and some small businesses to front yards and home gardens.

A Stroll Through the Garden: Cannonball fungus

A Stroll Through the Garden: Cannonball fungus Eric Larson View Comments A few years ago I was working in a one of my client’s beds about this time of year. I saw these little black dots all over her walls in the garden near her front door on the hard surfaces of the stones on the wall. This wall is a south facing and had a fairly moist, protected area in the beds around the wall. This bed was so protected you could say there was a micro-climate. So, you have warm and moist conditions, which are said to be ideal for growing mushrooms.
