Ministry condemns vandalism of C19 facility Following the closure of the temporary shelter for street dwellers, located immediately beneath the Riverside Carpark, South Quay, Port-of-Spain in February 2021, the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services recently received reports of alleged acts of vandalism at the facility. The Ministry wishes to condemn such actions and calls on perpetrators to desist from such behaviour. The facility had been viewed as a proactive approach by the Ministry to provide short-term care and shelter for the most vulnerable under highly unusual and unpredictable circumstances given COVID-19 restrictions, and the fact that street dwellers were among the most high-risk populations for contracting the virus. However, as restrictions were lifted the facility was closed.

Apartment dwellers in Greater Noida allow street dwellers with shelter, warm clothes

(Photo: Abhishek Anand / India Today) A group of residents of high-rise apartments at Greater Noida West has been distributing blankets to the underprivileged in their nearby localities. The residents identify areas where underprivileged people stay at nights in this bone-chilling cold in the national capital region, and distribute blankets among them. We started this campaign after spotting many underprivileged people, including women and children, with not enough clothes to keep them warm. We raised this issue in WhatsApp groups and other social media platforms and many residents came forward to help them. So far, we have gifted blankets to over 150 people, said Manish Kumar, a resident of Supertech Ecovillage 1 of the area.
