MURPHYSBOROÂ â Mike Mills, the champion pitmaster behind 17th Street Barbecue affectionately known as âThe Legend,â has died.
His daughter, Amy Mills, said in a Facebook post Tuesday afternoon that Mills passed away Tuesday morning of non-COVID-related health issues.
âHe was deeply loved and words cannot describe how much he will be missed,â she wrote. âItâs a monumental loss for all of us at 17th Street Barbecue and the barbecue community.â
Mills is known in barbecue circles around the nation as one of the best to ever man a smoker. He is a four-time World Champion and three-time Grand World Champion at Memphis in May, known as the Super Bowl of Swine, according to 17th Streetâs website.

MURPHYSBORO (WSIL) If you ve taken a trip to Murphysboro, you ve probably noticed some new developments on your way to town.
Mayor Will Stephens says many projects are underway: 17th Street Barbecue will open a new sauce factory, Sergio s Mexican Restaurant will soon make its return and the city plans to install a Big Muddy Monster statue near the new Holiday Inn Express. We were able to keep under budget this year and when you combine that at the city level with the continued faith that people are putting into the launch of new businesses in town, it really creates a great energy, he said.
