The last gasp of old-style JPs: a Barry Shurlock feature

FOR hundreds of years, individuals – all male, unpaid and with no requirement for legal training – were rubber-stamped as JPs onto the Commission of the Peace, to run local government and sit in judgement in the lower courts. The only condition was that they owned freehold land of a certain value (latterly £100), and had the approval of the Chancellor (in practice the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire) who awarded a dedimus potestatem writ (meaning ‘we have given the power’). Lists of hundreds of JPs who were appointed to the Commission are held in the Hampshire Record Office under headings such as ‘Our most dear Cousins and Councillors’. The one for 1836 covers seven large sheets and represents the great and the good of the county.

Council criticised for lack of commitment to the Camrose and ice rink in new budget

THE council has been criticised for ‘lack of commitment’ to sports facilities in the town, after it failed to include them in its recently-approved financial strategies. At a meeting of full council on Thursday (February 25), the administration’s 2021/22 budget and capital investment strategy were both approved by members - but some raised concerns about the lack of inclusion of facilities important to town residents. Cllr Tony Jones (Labour, Buckskin) said it was “strange” to see a lack of commitment to help Basingstoke Town Football Club and the ice rink within the council’s budget or capital investment strategy. He said: “It’s one of the things we’ve been talking about this last year or so, it’s very important to our residents across the borough, and I’m wondering why we haven’t got anything in the capital programme to support them at some stage.
