Stratford District Council has today decided to introduce
a Māori Ward in time for the 2022 local body
elections.
Councillors voted unanimously in support of
the decision in an emergency meeting of Council held this
morning, Friday 21 May 2021- the final day councils can make
a decision on establishing Māori representation for the
2022 local election.
Over 100 people were present to
hear the outcome of the vote which was welcomed with
applause, waiata and haka. Deputations were made to
councillors prior to the decision making by representatives
of Ngati Ruanui, Ngaruahine, Ngati Maru, Taranaki Iwi,
Taranaki Māori Trust Board, Rongomai Community Action Group

A careers expo is planned for Youth Week 2021 in
Stratford this May, and it’s sure to inspire our next
generation of workers and those already in work but looking
for change.
Hosted by the Stratford Mayors Taskforce
for Jobs Workforce Programme, with support from the Ministry
of Social Development, Stratford High School, Taranaki
Diocesan, Rapid Relief Team and the Stratford District Youth
Council, the event brings together a number of local
businesses, services and training providers to provide a
platform for people to learn more about their career
options.
Workforce Coordinator Lisa Holland says,

Water, waste, economic development and housing are the
key themes up for debate in Stratford District Council’s
Long Term Plan (LTP) 2021-2031 and people now have less than
a week to share their views on Council’s options going
forward.
At last week’s public meeting there was a
good discussion on water conservation and Council’s
preferred option of implementing water metering. District
Mayor, Neil Volzke says, “Access to clean drinking water
is vital and the rivers we take our water supply from need
to be looked after. We should not waste this
resource.”

This week four new Stratford District Youth Councillors
have been officially sworn in by District Mayor Neil
Volzke.

Taylyn Kelsen and Victoria Payne have joined Connor Giblin
(Co-Chair), Harmony Hanover (Co-Chair), Achim Hanne, Alena
Hojdelewicz, Emma Steele, Keisya Gunawan and Taleesha Kelsen
to make up the full 11 members of the Stratford District
Youth Council.
District Mayor Neil Volzke says,
“These young people will gain a lot of knowledge and
