cal perry as always my friend great reporting. please stay safe. all right, today s strikes in lviv contradicting what at least one russian officials calls a move wayfair from a countrywide attack on ukraine to focus on the, quote, complete liberation of the donbas region that the kremlin nounlzed asset a strategy shift in the region as losses are piling up. joining me now with his insight on the strategy shift is andriy, former ukraine defense minister. andriy thank you for joining us on this. we appreciate it. i first want to talk about the incredible success we ve seen from ukrainian forces, this unprecedented ability to hold back to fight off russian forces, take back cities from russian forces. what do you lend that success to? well we are way more
information. reporter: yeah, wolf, we ve seen for weeks what appeared to be russian movement toward trying to encircle the ukrainian capital of kyiv. and perhaps take the city itself. it is what u.s. officials were looking at in their intelligence before the invasion even began. with fierce fighting, at this point in time a senior u.s. defense official said the russians are digging into defensive positions in the outskirts of the city. they ve shown no interest in moving forward toward the city at the current standpoint. they also seem to be focusing most of their interests on the eastern part of the country. the donbas region, which tracks what we ve heard today from russian military officials, saying that was their focus. the eastern part of the country. it seems to be at least somewhat of a strategy shift. most possibly a face-saving shift as well, given the difficulty russian forces have had over the first month of the invasion. one thing to keep an eye on according to the defens
lviv as it appears to be a huge strategy shift for the russian military and the ukrainian city of lviv were millions of internally displaced ukrainians are hiding out fearfully right now. we are talking about 2 million at last check from the united nations that have moved from central and eastern ukraine into the western city of lviv. basically hiding out there. wondering if they should cross the border. now they might actually make the decision to cross the border because we are seeing this attack just happened a few moments ago. the president today didn t get to meet with the refugees. finally said he was disappointed just about 60 miles of the border yesterday he was not. he visited a soccer stadium he got to talk to mothers, he got to talk to children, some of them stopped him and started speaking to him and ukrainian.
