North Northumberland project given green light

A whisky distillery in Northumberland has been given the green light to be built after funds needed for the project were approved. Work on Ad Gefrin, situated in the north of the county in Wooler, will now get underway as soon as possible after over £4.5 million was given for the scheme – the first venture to be created as part of the Borderlands Programme for Northumberland. “This is extremely welcome news which will bring more jobs, investment and visitors to this beautiful part of our county,” said Glen Sanderson, Leader of Northumberland County Council.  “We’ve worked so hard behind the scenes to support this fantastic project and we’re looking forward to seeing construction start imminently and hopefully open for business by the end of next year.”

Fort William Gardens set for $1 1 million facelift

The Fort William Gardens is set for over $1 million in upgrades. (File photo) THUNDER BAY – The aging Fort William Gardens is set for a $1.1 million facelift, with provincial and federal funding programs coming through with nearly 80 per cent of the costs. The upgrades, which include new ice deck flooring and a video scoreboard, will position the Gardens and adjacent Fort William Curling Club to host future events, including the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in 2022. That national event was initially set to be hosted in the city-owned facility in 2021, before COVID-19 forced a change of plans to 2022. The city was successful in securing grants of over $550,000 from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC)’s Strategic Economic Infrastructure Fund, and $300,000 from FedNor.
