Kitchen trends for 2021: These award-winning kitchens embrace colour and texture

STUFF Kitchens don t get any better than this - these are the 2021 TIDA New Zealand Kitchens of the Year. Award-winning kitchens often showcase new design trends, and the winners in the 2021 Trends International Design Awards (TIDA) are no exception. This year’s New Zealand awards, announced on Thursday, May 13, saw architect Pat de Pont of Strachan Group Architects, designer Morgan Cronin of Cronin Kitchens, and Milvia Hannah of German Kitchens take top honours. TIDA director Paul Taylor says there were design features coming through that showed designers were looking to add something more distinctive to their kitchens. SIMON DEVITT Birchwood ply features in this kitchen by Pat de Pont of Strachan Group Architects (SGA), which won the 2021 TIDA New Zealand Architect-designed Kitchen of the Year award.

Waipapa, a farm shed-inspired home by Strachan Group Architects, on a riverbank at Whangapoua beach on the Coromandel Peninsula “responds sympathetically to the landscape beyond”. “Everything is considered, from exceptional detailing to spaces that are both functional and inviting; from multi-use bedrooms to an open-plan entertaining area. Outdoor rooms with screen actuators mimic the ritualistic aspects of camping while retaining access to the comforts of modern living.”

Kitchen of the Week: Ply mixes with black in this award-winning project

SIMON DEVITT Hoop pine plywood cabinetry in the kitchen contrasts a matt-black folded steel island with a stainless steel benchtop. SIMON DEVITT The kitchen opens right up to the outdoors, and benefits from the sea views in the other direction. Hoop pine plywood cabinetry with recessed handles enhances the sculptural look of the kitchen. Similar ply wraps the ceiling.The island features a matt black folded steel surround topped with a bead-blasted stainless steel bench. Geometric folds in the metal provide legroom for the bar stools. Even the kitchen table has a matching timber top with black legs, and chairs.
