10 On February 29, 2020, Sgt. First Class Dustin Dearborn, a Vermont National Guard instructor at the Army Mountain Warfare School, responded to an emergency call from State Police to assist in the rescue of two skiers lost at night, in deteriorating weather near the Stowe Mountain ski area.
Dearborn never imagined that 16 months later, Vermont State Governor Phil Scott would decorate him with the Soldier’s Medal, one the military’s highest honors, awarded only for acts of heroism not involving conflict with an armed enemy.
“It should be no surprise that a member of the Vermont National Guard would earn such a recognition, that commitment to service and community, that sense of duty is engrained in every member of the Guard,” Scott said.
Stowe Mountain Rescue came to the aid of a female mountain biker injured on Bears Trail in Cady Hill trails system Saturday afternoon. Crews deployed a two-member team to locate and assess the bikerâs condition.
Stowe emergency medical services sent in a medic to begin packaging the patient while Mountain Rescue deployed a litter and wheel system and deployed to the accident scene. The woman was transported by ambulance.

Stowe Mountain Rescue assisted teams from Colchester Technical Rescue and Bolton Fire Department Friday in a rescue operation in Bolton that swept away a familyâs beloved pet and where a man nearly lost his life.
The man was walking his dog near Joiner Brook, just above the popular summer swimming hole called Bolton Potholes, when his dog Yogurt jumped into the brook, swollen from rain and snow melt, and was immediately swept away. Â
The man jumped in to save his dog but was swept downstream about 100 feet before he was able to climb onto a rock in the middle of the river just above the gorgeâs falls.
