For years on Friday mornings, public radio listeners have become accustomed to laughing, contemplating and, yes, sometimes crying because of the thoughtful and moving StoryCorps interviews they hear on NPR’s Morning Edition.
Founded in 2003, StoryCorps has given more than 600,000 people in the United States the chance to share stories about their lives.
Now, 33 residents of Alton can add their name to that list. StoryCorps Chicago will present a virtual event this Friday, “Untold Black Stories of Alton, Illinois.”

Untold Black Stories of Alton will be presented by StoryCorps Chicago with a public virtual listening event at Jacoby Arts Center in Alton 5-6 p.m. Friday, March 5, and an optional live-stream event to homes. After the presentation of the stories, a discussion will take place with featured participants followed by the opening of the “RISE” exhibit 6-8 p.m. March 5 showcasing regional artists of color.
