gregg: an extreme weather alert, buried in snow, skidding on ice. huge chunks of the country dealing with nasty winter conditions right now, and in the colorado the videotape tells the story best. cars are either stuck in the snow or sliding on top of it. temperatures expected to drop to a teeth-chattering 11 degrees. can you believe it? our fox affiliate, kddr, is live in colorado. tell us where you are and what the conditions are like there. reporter: well, i m just west of downtown denver. the big interstate here, i-70, takes you to aspen, vail, where many people are headed right now to celebrate new year s eve. but this storm has really dumped a lot of snow in varying areas around the denver metro area and especially a lot of snow up in the mountains. the temperatures, -5 when i got out here this morning at about 4:00.
reports of the airport at fayetteville now i shut down because of all the degree and, of course, those reports that we re getting at least three deaths in the town of cincinnati, arkansas. the severe threat is extensive. this is a widespread area and very rare, very rare to see tornadoes of this magnitude this time of year, especially as far north as parts of illinois as well as missouri. i mean, december 31st is pretty crazy to see active tornado warnings. part of the reason is we have extremely cold air pouring in from canada and very warm, moist, unstable air ahead of this cold front, and the temperatures tell the story here. 33 in kansas city, 65 in memphis. 70 in new orleans, 49 in atlanta, so you ve got the clash of those two air maases, something you typically see in the springtime. so this is a very rare event that s unfolding. and then the blizzard conditions across the northern plains and
a rare 3.8 magnitude earthquake and taking the residents there by surprise. and while the quake did not do any major damage, some folks were left to clean up quite a mess. wxin has that story. reporter: the earthquake captured on the security cameras inside cox supermarket in the alexandria served as a wake-up call for john cox. i heard a big boom and immediately thought something hit our building. reporter: in fact, within seconds you can see him run outside to see for himself. turns out, he didn t find much of anything. no damage that i could see, and we didn t lose any merchandise, nothing fell off the shelves. this whole shelf just shook like crazy like this, and everything fell here. reporter: that wasn t the case for david simmons. in addition to a busted vase and items on the floor, he found a crack above his door and another one appeared outside from his driveway to the street. the house felt like a bomb.
