Licensing laws: Longer pub opening times 'could cost police £7m'

BBC News By Stephen Walker Published image copyrightPA Media Changes to Northern Ireland s licensing laws could cost police £7m in overtime, a Stormont committee has been told. The figure is contained in a letter sent to politicians examining a bill for reforming licensing laws. The changes would extend late-night opening hours and are contained in proposed new legislation which is at committee stage at the Northern Ireland Assembly. Police said changes to shift patterns would have to meet EU working rules. MLAs have previously taken evidence from a range of interested bodies, including senior Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) figures.

Covid-19: Emergency fund for arts bodies 'is £16m short'

Covid-19: Emergency fund for arts bodies is £16m short Published image captionMany arts and entertainment venues do not know when they can reopen to audiences There is £16m less in an emergency fund for arts and entertainment organisations and venues than is needed, it has been claimed. The comment was made by Roisin McDonough, chief executive of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland (ACNI). She told Stormont s Communities Committee that exceedingly difficult choices would have to be made if more money was not made available. Many arts and entertainment venues have been closed since March. That has left many venues and organisations facing substantial deficits and uncertainty.
